Surf

A group physical warmup for synchronization and attention: the team becomes a single surf wave rolling onto the "shore" and pulling back, accompanying the movement with water sounds and changing character.

Setup and Launch

Form a line: six participants shoulder to shoulder, hands on each other's shoulders — this is one "body" of the wave. Mark an imaginary "shore" in front of the line and the direction to roll back. Ask them to create a sound layer of incoming water throughout the exercise — the sound should be part of the overall movement.

How It Works

  1. First passes. Do several cycles of "surge — rollback", maintaining the integrity of the line and continuous sound. The goal is to hear the collective sound and feel synchronized movement.

  2. Switching initiation. Change where the wave "comes from": from the left, right, or center. The others pick up the impulse so that each time the character of the wave differs from the previous one.

  3. Alignment. Continue the cycles until a steady unison appears: equal amplitude of movement and synchronized sound from the whole group.

  4. Variable wind. On the host's signal, "wind" alternately strengthens and dies down — with it, the power and volume of the wave increases or decreases. Maintain control so the line doesn't drift off the stage.

Key rules

  • Set up a neat six-person line shoulder to shoulder; hands on neighbors' shoulders — all one "body".

  • Immediately establish continuous water sound background, synchronized with the movement.

  • Mark the starting point of each wave: from the left, right, or center — on your signal.

  • Introduce the "wind" parameter (strengthening/fading) and discuss safety given differences in height and weight.
