Picture
A pair warmup on instant scene launch through a readable pose from the first actor and precise reading by the partner. Trains observation, physical expression, and context-setting without verbal explanation.
Duration
3–5 min per pair
Full description
Setup and Launch
Empty stage, group at the edge. Pairs work in turns. Explain the goal: the first "line" of the scene is a static body picture in relation to the space (floor, walls, backdrop); the clearer the pose, the easier it is for the partner and audience to understand the situation.
Focus attention on observing real life: typical body positions in familiar places (passenger on a bus, homeless person on the street, vendor at a counter). Ask participants to avoid explanatory words and object mime — meaning should be readable from body geometry and contact with the stage.
How It Works
-
Actor A enters and takes an expressive position, physically touching the stage (floor, side wall, backdrop). Freezes.
-
Actor B "reads the picture": runs through several plausible interpretations (who/where/what happened), chooses one.
-
Actor B enters with an action or short line that clearly confirms the chosen interpretation, thereby setting the context for their partner.
-
The pair continues a full scene in the accepted reality, not rewriting what was offered.
The power of the exercise lies in the precision and readability of the pose: convey "who-where-why" before any words or mime, relying only on body placement.
Key rules
For the first actor: take a clear, recognizable position while making physical contact with the stage; freeze.
The meaning must be visible from the body position; avoid explanatory lines and excessive mime.
For the second actor: consider several options and enter with an action or first line that confirms the chosen interpretation.
After entering, support the offered reality rather than correcting your partner.
