Emotional Circle

A group warmup on adaptation and emotional transmission: participants pass a state around the circle using only sound, observing its inevitable changes. Trains readiness to accept partners' interpretations and flexibility of response.

Full description

Setup and Launch

The group stands in a circle. The trainer quietly whispers an assigned emotion to one participant. The rule: the emotion is transmitted only through sound; gestures and facial expressions should be kept to a minimum. Key instruction: the goal is not precise copying or "guessing," but a willingness to change and adapt to partners' interpretations.

How It Works

  1. Assigning the emotion. The trainer gives one participant an emotion by whispering.

  2. First signal. The participant turns to the neighbor on their right or left and transmits the emotion through sound, with almost no gestures.

  3. Passing around the circle. Each person receives the sound in their own way, "passes it through themselves," and transmits it onward in sound to the next — the signal gradually changes.

  4. Closing the loop. When the circle is complete, the original participant receives the sound that has passed through the group and tries to repeat it.

  5. Debrief. They name the original emotion. The group briefly discusses what emerged and why the sound changed. Variation: instead of the trainer whispering, the first participant chooses what emotion to transmit through sound.

Key rules

  • Transmit the emotion through sound only; keep gestures and facial expressions to a minimum.

  • Accept your neighbor's version without corrections: pass it through yourself and send it on.

  • At the end, the original participant repeats the final sound and announces the starting emotion; then a brief discussion of the differences.

  • The focus is not on accuracy and copying your partner, but on the willingness to change and adapt.
