Parallel reality
An editing short scene with alternative branch points: on the host's signal, the action rewinds to a significant moment and plays out differently. Useful for training story structure, timing, and the ability to preserve facts while changing cause-and-effect chains.

Setup and Launch
Place 2β3 performers on stage and get a location or relationship from the audience. Explain that this is a normal scene, but you will periodically rewind the action to a key moment and offer a different path. Establish a clear return signal: a verbal command "Rewind to... [moment]" and, if desired, a gesture/clap. Ask performers to remember facts and blocking, avoid meta-commentary, and play the truth of the relationship. Set the parameters: 1β3 branch points per scene, duration 3β5 minutes.
Flow
-
Starting scene. Performers develop the situation up to the first meaningful choice or event with consequences; the host waits until the stakes become clear.
-
Marking the branch point. The host briefly names the return point ("when you picked up the knife from the table") and asks everyone to restore their body positions, objects, and the last exchange of lines.
-
Rewind. On the signal, performers quickly rewind to the named moment. The host, if necessary, frames the variation ("this time the hero doesn't confess").
-
Alternative run. Performers change one or two causal variables while keeping the established facts and emotional truth. The host monitors clarity and lets the variation reach a new meaning or a vivid turn.
-
New nodes and finale. Another branch point can be chosen if desired. Don't accumulate endless branches; wrap up at the precise moment when the alternative has produced a fresh result.
Key rules
Return to the most recent meaningful choice, not too far back β this preserves the scene's momentum.
Maintain continuity: same positions, objects, and already-established facts at each return.
Change one or two parameters at a time, not everything at once β that's how the alternative difference reads clearly.
Look for a new cause and consequences, not just a different joke β let relationships and stakes change.
Cut on time: as soon as the variation has played out, lock in the result or move to the next branch point.
