Full description
Setup & Launch
Two performers take the stage; the third waits offstage. Before starting, all three briefly discuss each character: key traits, voice, physicality. This prep lets the incoming performer step in convincingly.
Flow
The two performers play a free scene β establishing characters, relationships, and a situation. They play the character's truth, not the joke.
When the audience reacts to a performer's choice β a giggle, a snort, a full laugh β the host calls the switch immediately. The performer who drew the laugh exits. The third performer enters as the same character: same voice, same body position, same emotional state. The scene continues without pause.
The exited performer moves offstage and waits. When someone draws a laugh again, the cycle repeats. Over eight to twelve minutes, performers rotate many times β characters stay stable, performers keep changing.
Key rules
One continuous scene, no edits. When the host calls a switch, the exiting performer leaves immediately and the incoming performer enters without pause, continuing as the same character. Character continuity β voice, physicality, emotional state, story context β is everything.

What to try next
Similar formats, so you can keep the rehearsal moving without stopping to search.
Inner Thoughts
A short-form scene where performers step out of dialogue to voice their characters' inner thoughts β or freeze and ask the audience what to do next.
Format wheel
Actors play a scene, the host periodically stops with a bell and asks the audience to name a number from 1 to 6, each number has a format or game rule assigned to it.
What did the author forget to say?
An audience member retells their favorite book (ideally remembering it poorly); actors ask clarifying questions, then play scenes with edits based on what they heard.
Not the best moment
A carousel of short scenes: each new entry on stage cuts the current episode and launches a new one, and then the group returns to unfinished scenes. Good for training cβ¦
